Saving A Baby

Prepare the Way Ministry recently hired Janet, a young woman to be a second security guard for night duty at the mission base. She has been a Muslim all of her life until 3 months ago when she met Jesus and He became her Savior and Lord.

Eighteen months ago, Janet’s pregnancy ended early, and she went into premature labor. Her son, Jarem was born at just 26 weeks of age. Janet described her son as the size of a large rat. His entire body fit into one of her hands. In Uganda, there is not a lot that can be done for a preemie. There are no New Born Intensive Care Units. The baby is usually just sent home. What will happen, will happen. Janet was very reluctant to take little Jarem home because in her heart, she knew that her baby was going to die.

God was there with Janet. He was already caring for the baby. There was a pastor in the maternity ward that day. He was demonstrating the love and compassion of the Father. The pastor was going around the ward praying for the mothers and the babies. He came to Janet’s bed, and he prayed for God to touch little baby Jarem’s life. Janet was discharged later that day and she and Jarem left the hospital. Her tiny, little baby had not been strong enough to nurse, but suddenly with a renewed strength, he began to nurse.

As Janet saw that her son was gaining both weight and strength, she realized that her baby was going to live. This encounter with the Lord began Janet’s quest to find out more about this God who cared about humanity and changed their lives.

A year and a half has passed and Jarem is now a normal, healthy 18 month old child full of life and energy. Janet has often thought about the pastor that prayed for her baby that day. She always wondered if she would ever meet that pastor again. She wanted so badly to share with him the good news of her son’s life.

Psalm 8:1

O Lord, our Lord,

How majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

From the lips of children and infants

You have ordained praise.

Every Friday evening we have worship nights at the mission base. Last Friday, Janet saw the pastor again but didn’t get to find out who he was or to talk to him. Today is Wednesday, Janet was working and she saw him again. The pastor is one of Faith Bible College’s instructors in the Christian Counseling Department, Pastor Rasto Walukana. We decided that Janet should become reunited with him and have the opportunity to tell him the story.

Janet and I entered the classroom where Pastor Rasto was teaching. We told him that we had a wonderful surprise and testimony for him to hear. I interviewed Janet and she explained her story to the class and to Pastor Rasto. He was rejoicing in the Lord when he heard of the miracle that God had performed a year and a half ago, while he was in the hospital praying for people.

Once again, we stand in absolute awe of our wonderful God. What love! What mercy! What kindness!

Psalm 9:1-2

I will praise you,

O Lord, with all my heart;

I will tell of all your wonders.

I will be glad and rejoice in you;

I will sing praise to your name,

O Most High.
